Birth Control : IUD
IUD
The IUD is a device that is inserted into the uterus and can be worn for up to 10 years. A woman choosing this method wants long term birth control, yet if pregnancy is desired, the IUD can be removed at any time before the 10 year limit. IUD’s are inserted by healthcare professionals during a woman’s menstrual period. Most women experience little or no pain or discomfort during the insertion process. In order to have an IUD inserted, you must have a medical exam which includes medical history, pelvic exam, Pap smear, and cervical and vaginal cultures. The IUD is 99% effective.
The Paragard IUD does not contain any hormones so there are no hormone related side effects. Some women experience heavier cramps and bleeding after insertion of the IUD for several months. Risks of the IUD include expulsion in which the IUD falls out of the uterus, uterine perforation (IUD goes through wall of uterus), slight increased risk of ectopic pregnancy, pelvic inflammatory disease, bleeding between periods, uterine cramping and unwanted pregnancy. There is no protection against HIV. You must be in a monogamous (one to one) relationship, and have no history of ectopic pregnancy or of PID (Pelvic Inflammatory Disease).
