Emergency Contraception (EC) (morning after pill, day after pill, post coital contraception, day after contraception, plan b) consists of taking hormonal medications consisting of progestin only medications (levonorgestrel, plan b) a set of estrogen and progesterone contraceptive pills (birth control pills), RU486 (Mifeprex), anti-inflammatory medications, anti-inflammatory steroids (decadron), Histamine H2 antagonist (Tagamet), or the placement of an Intrauterine Device (IUD) inside your uterus in order to decrease the chance of becoming pregnant after unprotected intercourse. When using plan b for EC, the greatest chance of reducing pregnancy by 89% occurs if taken within 72 hours after unprotected intercourse. There are recent studies that show EC with birth control pills or plan b may be effective up to 120 hours (5 days) after intercourse. The IUD has been shown to be nearly 100% effective in preventing pregnancy if inserted 5 days or less after unprotected intercourse. RU486 has been studied many years in Europe and China as an emergency contraceptive method and has been shown to be more effective than birth control pills. It has been determined that implementation of emergency contraception would reduce the unwanted pregnancy rate by 1.4 million people per year in the United States. You do not need an appointment at any of our facilities during regular office hours to be evaluated for the EC treatment. Walk-ins are always welcome for this service.
