Birth control Pills are taken every day. The woman must be committed to taking the pill about the same time on a daily basis. Birth control pills contain both estrogen and progesterone. You must have a medical exam which includes medical history, pelvic exam, and Pap test to receive birth control pills. If used correctly, the pills are 99% effective. Birth control pills can cause breast tenderness, nausea, spotting, nervousness, depression, and emotional instability. Usually these symptoms subside after the first several months of taking them. Strokes, blood clots, and circulation disorders occur with birth control pills.  If you have a history of liver disease, blood clotting disorder, stroke or hypertension, then birth control pills are not right for you.

Women over 35 who smoke are not able to use birth control pills. Headache, vision changes, chest pain, abdominal pain, or leg pain (calf) are all signs that you should be evaluated and birth control stopped immediately. Benefits of birth control pills are a reduced incidence of uterine and ovarian cancer, benign breast disease, pelvic infections, iron-deficiency anemia, rheumatoid arthritis, and a variety of menstrual disorders. There is no protection against HIV or sexually transmitted infections.
